Starting at the Chattooga Picnic Area adjacent to the Walhalla Fish Hatchery, hikers pass through the lush East Fork Gorge into the Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area, which provides a backdrop for most of this trail. The trail meanders to a junction with the Chattooga Trail, offering options to backtrack or extend the hike to Ellicott Rock.

Chattooga Picnic Area to Gorge Entry (0.8 miles)
The trail begins adjacent to Walhalla Fish Hatchery, following the north bank of the East Fork. The initial section passes through a mixed hardwood forest before entering a more dramatic gorge environment. The trail is well-defined, with occasional access points to the river.
Gorge Section to Wilderness Boundary (0.9 miles)
Pass through lush East Fork Gorge with towering walls and fast-moving water. A dense canopy provides shade and diverse microhabitats. Cross into the Ellicott Rock Wilderness Area with minimal impact camping regulations in effect.
Wilderness Area to Chattooga Trail Junction (0.8 miles)
The trail continues through a wilderness setting to a junction with the Chattooga Trail. From the junction, hikers can return via the same route or extend the hike 1.9 miles north to the Ellicott Rock historic boundary marker.
Extension Opportunities
Ellicott Rock Extension: From Chattooga Trail junction, hike 1.9 miles north to reach historic Ellicott Rock boundary marker where Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina meet.
Burrells Ford Connection: Can access the trail from the west via a 2.1-mile hike on the Chattooga Trail from Burrells Ford, creating a longer point-to-point option.
